Les effets de la voix maternelle sur le bébé prematuré dans la couveuse / The effects of the mother’s voice on premature infants in incubators.
Premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are often deprived of vocal stimulation of their mothers. This may account for some of the developmental problems seen later in childhood such as attention deficits, language delays, communication disorders and learning disabilities. Our research is thus focused on optimize the sound environment in NICU incubators. In our studies, infants receive an individualized audio track of their own mother’s voice and heartbeat coupled with low frequency womb sounds. We then play the maternal sounds via micro audio technology installed in the infant’s incubator. To assess the effectiveness of this auditory intervention vs. routine care, we look at various clinical measures including growth, weight gain, length of hospitalization, cardiorespiratory stability, feeding abilities, maternal stress, and long-term developmental outcomes. Our preliminary results suggest that this approach may lead to significant impacts on future neonatal care.
